Seven years after a Yonkers baby was shaken to death, her father is pushing for a national law to prevent such tragedies.

"As Cynthia's father it [is] my responsibility to make sure that she [is] never forgotten and I do this to make sure that other children are protected from that same cruel act that took Cynthia from me," Darryl Gibbs said. He is supporting the Shaken Baby Prevention Act of 2007.

Day care worker Barbara Baron was convicted and sentenced to serve up to 15 years for the shaking death of 8-month-old Cynthia in 2000. Cynthia?s father successfully petitioned then-Gov. George Pataki to sign a bill into law in Cynthia's name last summer. The law makes it a felony in New York to seriously injure children under the age of 5 by shaking, slamming or throwing them.

Gibbs, who has two teenage daughters, has teamed up with Congresswoman Nita Lowey to get a federal measure passed.

"Last week, I introduced legislation that would provide money to the Department of Health and Human Services, which would provide education programs for doctors and child care centers," Lowey said.

Gibbs believes the Shaken Baby Prevention Act of 2007 would go a long way in preventing future deaths. He expects it to be signed into law by President Bush within the next six months.
