The mother who was convicted along with her boyfriend of scalding her two boys to death was sentenced Tuesday.
Luz Arroyo, 26, was sentenced to one-and-a-third to four years in state prison for the deaths of 2-year-old Elijaha Santana and his half-brother, 20-month-old David Maldonado Jr. Her boyfriend, David Maldonado, who is the father of one of the boys, was sentenced to five to 15 years in state prison on two counts of manslaughter and one count of criminal possession of a weapon. The boys died last July after suffering second and third-degree burns. The district attorney says the boys were put in scalding water while Arroyo and Maldonado were passed out on drugs.
The case sparked calls for reform at the Westchester County Department of Social Serivces, the agency that was supposed to be monitoring the troubled family.
