The Yonkers City Council voted Thursday night to approve its new budget, which includes surpassing the tax cap and increasing the property tax rate more than 4 percent.
Democrats on the board voted against the $1.1 billion spending plan. They wanted to see more money go toward Yonkers schools.
Republicans say increasing the taxes was the only way to bring in the money needed after they decided not to increase the real estate transfer tax.
Mayor Mike Spano insists it wasn't the budget he hoped to sign, but he believes there still a lot of good substance inside the plan.
"Record aid to education, this budget contains no cuts to fire and police or sanitation, and it's balanced. That what our taxpayers expect," said Spano.
