The Yonkers City Council is scheduled to vote Tuesday on whether to extend term limits for the mayor and members of the council without putting it before voters as a referendum question next November.

The move would allow city politicians to serve four four-year terms, or 16 years, instead of the current cap of three four-year terms.

It would also open the door for Democratic Yonkers Mayor Mike Spano to run again once his third term expires at the end of next year.

Republican Council Member Mike Breen, who just lost an election to unseat New York state Assembly Member Nader Sayegh and Democratic Council Member Corazon Pineda-Isaac are also in their third terms.

The council is holding a public hearing this evening at the Riverfront Library to see where the community stands on the issue.

Last Tuesday, groups packed the legislative chamber as the council voted 4-2 (Breen was absent) to move the amendment out of committee and to a regular meeting for an official vote. The room was fairly split with many holding signs saying "four more years" and others yelling "let the voters decide."

Those in favor of extending term limits told News 12 they liked the direction the city has gone since Yonkers Mayor Mike Spano was first elected in November 2011, while opponents argued the City Council shouldn't be able to make Democracy-type decisions without allowing the public to vote on it.

Term limits were established in Yonkers in 1994, and voters rejected a referendum question expanding limits in 2001 before the City Council voted to extend them from two-to-three without a public vote in 2018.

The council is scheduled to vote on the measure Tuesday at the legislative chambers starting at 7 p.m.
