Yonkers center gives homeless a break from the cold
A Westchester host program serves as a temporary stay for the county?s homeless during nights when the weather is unbearable.
Alfred Burwell from Yonkers is one of the dozens of homeless that The Sharing Community helped on Thursday night when temperatures went into the teens.
"I would freeze to death,? said Burwell. ?I can't say enough about this place. They?re very helpful."
The center serves as a temporary refuge for the homeless where they can watch television and shower before they are transferred to two of the county?s shelters. At the shelters, they are able to sleep in a warm bed instead of on the streets. Volunteers at the center said that they have never turned anyone away.
"It's going to be a crowded night,? said Jasper Cokely, a volunteer at the center. ?We just have to make do with what we got."
