Firefighters battled high winds and flames after responding to a fire at a Yonkers apartment building Friday.
Investigators say the fire started around 12:30 p.m. in a basement apartment of a four-story building on North Broadway. Firefighters say most of the tenants had to evacuate either by the fire escapes or be rescued from the rooftop. Forty-two families have been left homeless by the fire.
The Red Cross set up operations in the Police Athletic League building down the street for those needing help. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
