Yonkers apartment rebuilt after fatal 2005 fire
A newly rebuilt apartment was officially opened Friday, nearly 10 years after it was destroyed in a fatal fire.
The January 2005 fire destroyed the apartment building at 100 Caryl Ave. and killed 54-year-old Aixa Hernandez. Hundreds were also left homeless.
Developers Gontar Management spent 18 months and $6 million to rebuild what was destroyed in the fire. The new apartment building has 50 units and sits along the northern border of Van Cortlandt Park. It is also near the proposed Yonkers Rail Trail, which will provide residents with mass transit options down to New York City.
One- and two-bedroom apartments are now available and 15 units have already been rented.
