Yonkers apartment fire forces evacuation
Residents in a Yonkers apartment building were forced out onto the streets when a fire broke out Friday night.
Fire officials suspect that a fire in the kitchen of a top floor apartment spread throughout the building. No one was hurt, but more than 25 residents sought refuge at the Nepperhan Community Center where the Red Cross and the Yonkers Office of Emergency Management were there to help. Some, like Jennifer Vicente, spent the night with relatives.
"This is your home,? said Vicente. ?I just slept here last night and now I have no place to go. I have to go to my family?s house, so it's scary."
Damage to electrical wiring prompted officials to temporarily turn off all the utilities as an extra precaution. They expect that residents should be able to return to their homes by Monday.
The actual cause is being investigated by the arson investigation unit of the fire department.
