Yonkers Mayor Mike Spano has proposed a $1.15 billion budget that includes cuts in the municipal budget and the work force – totaling 182 positions.  

The job cuts include city firefighters and the proposed closure of six companies, a reduction in foot patrols in the Yonkers Police Department, 49 positions from the Department of Public Works and the elimination of 18 parks positions.

News 12 reported last week that the proposed cuts are an effort to close a budget shortfall of $31 million.

"Our revenue is going up, all our costs are going up just a little bit higher,” said Spano. “It's an unsustainable model."

The proposal allots nearly $550 million for Yonkers schools, including $35 million for school improvements.

Schools Superintendent Dr. Edwin Quezada said the funds are “not enough” and stagnate any additional programs or staff.

"We are in a difficult position. We need to work together and resolve," he told News 12.

Assistant Fire Chief John Flynn, president of the Uniformed Officers Association, called the plan irresponsible.

"Horrible effect on morale, horrible effect in general operations and what we do in this business," said Flynn. "Mike Spano has put the City Council in a very, very bad position."

The City Council will make amendments before a final plan is passed. The deadline is June 1.
