A woman is dead after a fire at an apartment building in Ossining.
Fire officials say they got a call about a fire in a first-floor unit in The Hudson apartment complex on Cedar Lane about 5:30 a.m. today. “We arrived on the location, saw smoke pushing out of one of the units. The fire department made a quick stop. On our primary search, we found a woman deceased on the couch,” says Ossining Fire Chief Angelo Manicchio.
Investigators report they are not sure whether the woman died from a medical condition or in the fire. The medical examiner is now trying to determine the exact cause of death. They think the fire started somewhere near where the body was found and doesn’t appear to be suspicious. There were smoke detectors in the apartment.
While police have not identified the woman yet, neighbors tell News 12 that the woman was named Anne, was in her early 60s, lived alone, and that she was a heavy smoker.
The fire was put out quickly, and didn’t spread to any other units in the building. While people living in the building were initially evacuated, no residents will have to be displaced.
