Testimony got underway today in the 'Corridor of Corruption' trial of state Sen. Malcolm Smith.
Jurors heard from federal and local investigators, including an undercover FBI agent known as "Raj." The agents told the jury about how they recorded conversations between Sen. Smith and his co-defendants along with the undercover agent "Raj' and cooperating witness Moses Stern.
Sen. Smith is accused of trying to bribe his way into the race for New York mayor.
Defense lawyers say they will show nothing illegal occurred in the process. The defense also says Stern is unreliable because he faces several hundred years in jail, in connection with a major fraud case.
Also charged in the case are former New York City Councilman Daniel Halloran, who allegedly helped facilitate the bribes, and Vincent Tabone, the former vice chair of the Queens Republican Party, who allegedly accepted a bribe.
Former Spring Valley Mayor Noramie Jasmin and former Deputy Mayor Joseph Desmaret are also connected to the case. Desmaret pleaded guilty in the case, and Jasmine is scheduled to go on trial this fall.
