White Plains police have warned the public about check fraud and shared some safety tips.
Police say thieves have been going into personal mailboxes, obtaining U.S. postal mailbox keys and placing sticky substances in postal mailbox slots to collect the mail. They then use a chemical to wash away ink on checks to alter the check amount and payee.
White Plains authorities advise residents to collect their mail frequently, examine mailboxes before placing mail in, pay bills online or mail checks from post offices and install a security camera outside the home.
