Scientists have designed their own miniature robot that can shape-shift and even escape cages.
Video was taken as part of their research, which was published Wednesday in the journal Matter, shows the robot is solid while in the cage -- but it slowly liquifies to get out.
Scientists say they got the idea from sea cucumbers, which can alter their stiffness to protect themselves.
The robots are magnetic, can conduct electricity, and can shift between liquid and solid states to navigate tricky and compromising environments.
Scientists believe the technology can have a host of real-life applications.
The National Natural Science Foundation of China funded the study.
