A Westchester women's group co-president is weighing on President Donald Trump's choice to nominate Judge Amy Coney Barrett to the Supreme Court.

President Trump announced his Supreme Court nominee choice Saturday afternoon.

Barrett is a 48-year-old appellate judge, Notre Dame law professor and former law clerk to the late Justice Antonin Scalia. If confirmed, the known conservative would be just the fifth woman to sit on the Supreme Court.

Even though President Trump kept his promise to choose a female for the seat, some local women's rights activists don't see it as a win for their cause.

NOW Westchester chapter co-president Elizabeth Zimmerman says Trump's nomination is disastrous.

"Judge Barrett is really the antithesis of Justice Ginsburg," she says. "If she's confirmed, it will be disastrous first for 21 million Americans who depend on the Affordable Care Act, it'll also be disastrous for young women, LGBQT people, those who support sensible gun control, those who support voting rights, there are so many areas where this will be felt."

Zimmerman says she fears this could not only roll back 50 years of progress, but also affect the future.

"You have Barrett, Gorsuch and Kavanaugh, these are all very young, very conservative justices. That's why besides rolling back 50 years of progress we're looking at the next 40 years of a conservative, far-extremist, right-wing, conservative majority," she says.
