Westchester to buy privately-owned rides at Playland
Westchester County plans to buy, replace or close the remaining nine privately-owned rides at Rye Playland. The plan comes three weeks after an employee was killed on the Mind Scrambler ride. Gabriela Garin, 21, was killed after officials say she fell off the privately-owned ride. There is currently a memorial at the ride and the county says it will never reopen.
Last week during a legislative hearing, the county parks commissioner put the board of legislators on notice that eventually it would be asked to fund the purchase of some of the rides.
Critics complained that no additional taxpayer dollars should go into buying anything at Playland, since it still relies on county-subsidies to keep on sound financial ground. However, county officials say owning all the rides will give Westchester the control it needs to better train workers and manage all the rides at Playland.
