A Westchester community is protesting the upcoming arrival of a circus, saying the company abuses its animals.
The Kelly Miller Circus is coming to Verplank Tuesday and will set up shop on the Mount Carmel Grounds.
Hillary Millman has spearheaded a Change.org petition opposing the circus, which has gained more than 1,000 signatures. Millman, of Putnam Valley, says the way that Kelly Miller transports its animals is just part of the problem.
"Forcing them to drive all over the country when it's 80 and 90 degrees out, and having them spend their life in chains is not OK," she says.
Protesters say they have been directly messaging and posting messages on the circus' Facebook page, but all posts have been removed.
Despite the calls to shut down the circus, the show is expected to go on.
News 12 spoke with the circus' general manager by phone and was told that none of the animals used in the shows are abused.
