Westchester County has removed a plaque for Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee from Lasdon Park in Somers.
Shortly after he took office this January, County Executive George Latimer quietly directed park staff to remove the plaque dedicated to the Confederate commander and West Point graduate.
His predecessor, former County Executive Rob Astorino, chose not to remove the plaque along a trail of historic trees in the park.
The tree trail was put in Lasdon Park in 1994 with 32 trees and plaques, including the one for Lee. The county says that even when the trail was built, it wasn't meant to honor historic places and people, but rather be purely for public education.
