The Westchester regional director of the NAACP says the death of George Floyd, a black man who died after being pinned beneath the knee of a white Minneapolis police officer, was reminiscent of the death of Eric Garner.
"I’m frustrated to be perfectly honest with you,” says Wilbur Aldridge. “It really is very reminiscent of that particular incident and actually almost a replay."
In a video of Floyd’s death, he says “I can’t breathe” while being pinned to the street with the officer’s knee to his neck.
The same words were spoken by Eric Garner nearly six years ago as he was placed in a chokehold by an NYPD officer.
Aldridge says little has changed despite years of calls for change in the way black men are treated by police.
"We, as human beings, have to value…That will not happen until we begin to deal with this thing called racism," he says.
Floyd was arrested Monday after Minneapolis officers responded to a call about an alleged forgery in progress. The four police officers involved have been fired.
Aldridge says protests are not enough. He's calling for more police training and for lawmakers to step in and draft legislation before something like this happens again.
Floyd’s family is calling for criminal charges against the officers involved.
