The president of Westchester Medical Center fielded a barrage of questions Monday as lawmakers wondered whether a federal probe would leave the center on life support.

The Westchester County Board of Legislators expressed frustration that it was not immediately informed about the probe. Members complained they were forced to turn to the newspapers for details. Government representatives are investigating the possibility of fraud dealing with doctors and declined to talk to News 12 about the case. The center is under subpoena to produce hundreds of thousands, if not millions, of legal documents spanning the course of a decade.

Westchester Medical Center President Michael Israel admitted he failed to effectively communicate details about the probe and said it won't happen again. He said while he is unsure exactly what the government is looking for, investigations are common in today's highly regulated health industry.
