White Plains and Ossining superintendents say President-elect Joe Biden's proposal to safely reopen a majority of schools by the end of his first 100 days is doable.
Biden had said that it was an ambitious, but doable goal of safely reopening the majority of schools by the end of his first 100 days.
Biden formally tapped Connecticut Education Commissioner Dr. Miguel Cardona to lead the charge as the educational secretary.
“I’m grateful for the chance to take on this responsibility," says Cardona.
Superintendent of White Plains Public Schools Dr. Joseph Ricca says he believes it’s possible and there’s hope.
Dr. Ray Sanchez, the superintendent Ossining Union Free School District, agreed.
"I think we'll all work together to see if we can make that happen,” says Dr. Sanchez.
The promise comes as public schools in White Plains remain empty for in-person learning until at least Jan. 11.
"Our hope here is that we will be able to head off any potential increase in COVID-19 coming to the facilities,” says Dr. Ricca.
Yonkers Public Schools is following a similar plan of closing buildings until at least Jan. 8.
Local education officials hope that under new federal leadership, schools will receive the resources needed to remain open for full, in-person learning.
