Westchester County executives have suggested a new area for day laborers to gather after the Village of Mamaroneck closed its site.
The proposed temporary location is in front of the Mamaroneck Wastewater Treatment Plant. County officials say it?s a natural choice because the area is across from the Hispanic Resource Center and is in a commercial district. However, Mamaroneck?s mayor disagrees, saying the area is next to a busy road where workers could get hurt. He believes a day laborer site at Saxon Woods Park would be better. The Village Board will meet on the issue March 27 at the courthouse.
Hispanic rights advocates are considering legal action against the Village of Mamaroneck for allegedly discriminating against laborers by closing down the first work site.
