Westchester County Executive George Latimer spoke to News 12 today about many of the issues facing the county.
Latimer says the number of cases and hospitalizations has been relatively flat over the past week.
He says hopes the temporary hospital being constructed at the County Center will help not only Westchester, but neighboring counties as well. "I think the way the state is trying to manage this is not just county by county, so if we don't have the demand the people in the city and lower Hudson valley will be coming down."
He says the facility is expected to be finished by tomorrow.
Latimer also discussed the impact the virus is having on nursing homes. He estimates about 35% to 40% of all the county's coronavirus-related deaths are in nursing homes or assisted living facilities. "We're concerned there's not a systematic checking of every nursing home on a regular basis. Because you have the concentration of people who are older that are already there with underlying illness and that is exactly the target group that has had the most deaths."
Latimer says nursing homes are regulated by the state, but that the county is more than ready to ensure proper protocols are being followed. He adds that if there is a problem, the county will help immediately.
