Westchester health officials confirmed the first human case of the West Nile virus this year in the Hudson Valley Friday.

The 34-year-old Yonkers man, whose identity has not been released, is believe to have contracted the virus while visiting the West Coast recently, health officials said.

"We went and looked around where this person lives [and] didn't find mosquitoes. And on top of that, we haven't had a lot of West Nile Virus-positive mosquitoes in Westchester," said Dr. Joshua Lipsman, the Westchester County health commissioner.

Lipsman said two batches of mosquitoes have tested positive in the county this summer, compared to 20 batches at this time last year. Despite this, Lipsman recommends residents remain proactive, wearing bug repellents and clearing out puddles of standing water that can be used for mosquito breeding.
