Orange County officials are now trying to help hundreds of Yellow Freight workers suddenly without jobs this week after the company's operations in Maybrook abruptly shut down amid financial problems.
“We saw the writing on the wall, late July," said Dominic Scarano.
Scarano was a dock worker at the company's Orange County location for three years.  He says shipments stopped coming in last week. As of Friday, he says his boss told him not to come in to work.
“We learned all this in about a week's time. It kind of came upon us pretty quick,” said Scarano.
Yellow Freight was once one of the largest trucking companies in the U.S. The company’s financial problems shut down its operations nationwide this week with a reported 30,000 people throughout the country scrambling to find work.
Hundreds of workers were employed at the company’s operations in Maybrook. Orange County says they were never notified, and officials say they're working to help people suddenly without jobs.
“If you're listening and you know somebody, let them know that they can go to orangecounty.gov and just hit our employment and training and we will help them,” said County Executive Steve Neuhaus.
Neuhaus says other area companies are looking to hire workers laid off from Yellow Freight.
“I just feel bad for those people who’d been there for years and now have to start over,” said Scarano.
News 12's calls to the company for comment have not been returned.
