Westchester County took a step Friday to end an ongoing affordable housing dispute.
Since 2014, a 28-unit development called Chappaqua Station had been scheduled to be built on a 1/3-acre piece of land. It would have helped Westchester meet its mandated federal affordable housing quota of 450 homes that year.
The plans stalled, the county missed its quota and the matter has been tied up in the court system ever since.
The county purchased the land for $1.2 million and is preparing to pass it on to the project's developers.
"I think the closing today is proof positive that the 28 units of housing in Chappaqua should count towards the 2009 housing settlement requirement," says Westchester Executive Rob Astorino.
Astorino says he is doubtful that the transaction will matter much to the courts. He says Westchester has already satisfied its affordable housing quota with new homes in Rye.
The Chappaqua complex still needs final approval from the town board. There was no word on when that vote would be.
