WC County Center hosts 10th wheelchair basketball tournament
The Westchester County Center hosted its 10th annual wheelchair basketball tournament Thursday night.
Among the competitors were Cerebral Palsy of Westchester's team, the Barrier Breakers, and the Wildcats, of the Westchester School for Special Children.
"It's a big venue, a lot of crowd noise, great atmosphere, just really excited to play here," says Avery Schaefer, of Irvington.
The heights of the nets vary to accommodate the players' differing abilities.
"I kind of have that 'get the ball and shoot first' mentality," says Mamaroneck's Spencer Wolff. "We have to be all-around in this game, and that's what I'm going to try and do."
Wendall Rones, one of the coaches, says teams have been preparing since January.
"From that time on, they're talking about this moment here," he says. "So it's very, very special for them."
Many players tell News 12 that it's more about getting out there on the court to play than winning or losing.
