WC cops to fight gun violence with high-tech gadget
With shooting incidents on the rise in Yonkers and Mount Vernon, local police departments are expected to unveil a new high-tech gunshot detection system to help pinpoint the moment weapons are fired.
The new system uses acoustic and GPS technology to alert the police just seconds after shots are fired. Once the sensor detects a shot, the system plots the location from which the sound came on a satellite map with the accuracy of up to 25 meters of the exact spot.
"It is putting ears out there for us," says Mount Vernon Police Commissioner David Chong. "We cannot possibly have police officers on every corner on every block."
If the county board approves the high-tech tool, the gunshot detection systems will be placed in targeted areas in Mount Vernon and Yonkers.
"The city of Mount Vernon desperately needs it," says Mount Vernon Mayor Clinton Young. "It will help us in our streets. Help us in our approach, not only to solve crimes, but prevent shootings."
The high-tech system comes with the price tag of $3 million, which would be allocated from the county's capital improvement funds.
