Wake held for deceased Mount Vernon police officer
Family members, friends and fellow police officers gathered at the Camelot Funeral Home in Mount Vernon for the wake of Christopher Ridley, who was killed last Friday by fellow police officers.
Ridley, 23, tried to break up an assault between two men outside the county office building. The off-duty officer was shot trying to handle the situation.
Ridley?s parents only spoke briefly outside the funeral home. Fellow police officers wore black mourning bands over their badges to remember the man they now call a hero.
Sgt. Kevin Mandel, of the Mount Vernon Police Union, says all the members of the department are taking Ridley?s death hard.
?We have anger, we have sadness,? Mandel says.
The shooting is still under investigation.
?First we need to find out what happened and then we?ll find out what the answers are and what, if anything, went wrong,? Mandel says.
Ridley?s funeral will be held Feb. 1 at the Grace Baptist Church at 11 a.m. He will be buried with full police honors. Police officers from across the county are expected to attend.
