Volunteers worked Wednesday to prevent the Bronx River from flooding and causing sewage to seep into local waterways.
Volunteers picked up shovels and put in the work at Fort Knox Park. High schoolers and corporate workers from TD Bank and SNP helped created what is known as a "rain garden."
This is a mix of plants and shrubs that will help absorb rainwater. It will also help prevent the overflowing of the Bronx River.
The variety of native plants, organizers say, were chosen because they soak up water quickly and won't cause pooling. They say it will also support pollinators, which are critical for food crops and other plant life.
After the restoration work is complete, Bronx River Alliance workers will tend to the plants year-round.
