More than 100 people attended a virtual protest to call for inmates at Bedford Hills Correctional Facility to be released due to coronavirus concerns.
Protesters say vulnerable inmates should be released and the state should grant parole to those who are eligible.
More than 40 women at the facility have contracted the virus with one succumbing to the disease.
“These are human beings. We need to acknowledge them as such, we need to treat them as such,” says Tatiana Hill of VOCAL-NY.
Advocates say more needs to be done to save lives, including more testing within the prison facility.
The Department of Corrections has started to review the incarcerated population to identify inmates who are within 90 days of release. To date, they have released 176 inmates statewide due to the COVID-19 pandemic, eight of which were pregnant woman at the Bedford Hills prison.
