A vigil for peace was held in Nanuet Monday evening following the deadly violence over the weekend in Charlottesville, Virginia.

The vigil was held at the corner of Route 59 and Middletown Road.

The demonstration was a show of solidarity against hate after a car plowed into counter-protesters of a white nationalist rally in Charlottesville. The car attack killed one woman, who was described as a passionate advocate against injustice.

President Donald Trump was initially met with criticism for his remarks, which didn't single out white supremacists, after the incident. On Monday, he declared racism as evil.

The president also announced that the Department of Justice has opened a civil rights investigation vowing accountability.

The suspect in the deadly rampage, 20-year-old James Alex Fields Jr., is facing second-degree murder charges and is being investigated for potential civil rights crimes against the protesters.
