The father of James DeVito told News 12 that he was not surprised that NYPD Officer Richard Christopher's blood-alcohol level was three times the legal limit during the fatal wrong-way crash on the New York Thruway last month.
"He was a police officer. He couldn't have been mental. It had to be alcohol or drugs," said Joseph DeVito. "There's no other answer."
The crash killed both James DeVito and Christopher.
After the incident, Richard Christopher's family told News 12 that they believed he was heading to work at the time. State police now say he was actually heading home from a friend's house in Orangetown. Christopher's family and DeVito's children declined to comment on the development.
There is no word yet on what, if any, legal action the DeVito family may take against the estate of Richard Christopher.
