Veteran firefighter delivers food, company to housebound residents
Many people who can’t get out of their homes rely daily on Meals on Wheels for food.
Pete Celestino is a veteran firefighter who takes time on his off-day to deliver food and warm company to those who need it the most in New Rochelle.
Celestino says he started volunteering eight years ago and couldn’t stop.
“It was almost like family, and I felt really good about it. I feel good about being able to make a difference,” he says.
Phillis Maucier is on the board for Meals on Wheels in New Rochelle. She counts on 55 volunteers like Celestino to make sure that 50 people get fed every day.
Frank Davis coached softball in New Rochelle for decades, and says having Celestino stop by is a home run.
“It’s the highlight of my day,” says Davis.
The best part is that Davis knows he’ll have a hot meal and a warm smile no matter how cold it gets.
