A tenant-landlord dispute in Verplanck is leaving dogs future for a possible home in limbo.
Lisa Smith, who owns Canine Kindergarten and started A Good Dog Rescue back in 2018, told News 12 she was informed by the landlord that the town issued a violation for noise complaints made by neighbors.
“The notion that they are out barking all the time – it’s unreal," she said.
Smith added the property recently switched hands to a new landlord, who cut down trees that previously helped curtail noise. But even despite that, she's been ask to move out of the 6th street location by the end of July.
"I'm laying off paid staff through canine kindergarten, staff that I have kept through Covid," she added.
Smith acknowledged her rescue has saved 5,000 dogs nationwide since it began and that she's now searching for a new location with the assistance from Cortlandt Town Supervisor Rich Becker, M.D.
"A Good Dog Rescue is a valued part of our community and the town will try to help find an alternative site," Becker said.
The landlord did not respond to News 12 when asked to comment about the situation.
