Verizon workers warn of looming strike
Verizon workers rallied in Yonkers this morning and say they could go on strike if they don't get a new contract
A group of workers from the local Communications Workers of America gathered in front of the Verizon worksite on Nepperhan Avenue to rally before their workday.
Last weekend, the contracts of 38,000 CWA workers expired and while they agreed to stay on the job, the possibility of a strike is looming. Job security is a major sticking point among other issues.
"Pensions and wages are an issue, we're not really asking for the world we're just looking to maintain a certain lifestyle we're accustomed to," says Local 1003 President Kevin Sheil.
But Verizon released a statement that called the union's proposals unrealistic and out-of-touch in today's marketplace.
Union officials tell News 12 that there are no negotiating sessions currently scheduled but say they're ready and would like to go back to the bargaining table as soon as next week.
