A project to revitalize and beautify parts of Yonkers and uncover parts of the Saw Mill River took another step forward Tuesday.

Phase three of the Saw Mill River Daylighting Project took place as a wrecking ball demolished nearly a dozen vacant shops on North Main Street next to Yonkers City Hall.

The purpose of the project is to bring the Saw Mill River, which runs behind the storefronts, back to its natural habitat. Officials look to build green space around the river and turn the area into a 1.25-acre park. Crews also plan to add more plants and improve the banks of the Saw Mill River.

The project is being funded through city and state grants. The work is expected to be done in a year.
