Union questions Mount Vernon FD staffing
Firefighters union president Ernest Richardson says that Mount Vernon does not have the budget to employ a sufficient number of firefighters to battle blazes.
"You can't be short-staffed when it comes to fire," he says.
Typically, the Mount Vernon firehouse operates with seven firefighters. Mayor Ernie Davis says the department is not short-staffed, but that the firefighters are abusing their sick leave.
"There's no way that you can tell me that all of these young folks are getting sick at the same time," Davis says.
Davis has launched an investigation into the situation.
