Uncle arraigned for assaulting 2-month-old nephew
A Bronx man is being held on $200,000 bail after being arraigned for the alleged assault of his 2-month-old nephew.
Luis Cartagena is charged with felony reckless assault and acting in a manner injurious to a child under 17 years old.
According to the criminal complaint, the 32-year-old told police that Joemill Greer fell twice while he was baby-sitting, hitting his head, but he thought the boy was fine.
Prosecutors say the baby is in the hospital breathing with a ventilator and may not recover after suffering serious injuries. His mother had come home from work Monday to find the boy barely breathing, with blue lips and a swollen head.
The defense maintains that it was a horrible accident and that Cartagena did nothing to intentionally hurt the child. He's due back in court Nov. 3.
