The political power struggle over the New York State Senate was still being hashed out Wednesday.

Republicans claimed control of the chamber after an unprecedented coup this week involving two dissident Democrats who suddenly switched sides. Senate Democrats have since locked the door to the chamber and refuse to open it for the coalition.

On Wednesday, the dissident senators, Pedro Espada Jr., of the Bronx, and Hiram Monserrate, of Queens, claimed they had keys to the chamber and planned to call a legislative session, which hasn't happened.

"I am urging the leaders of the Senate to get back to the chamber. They can work out their problems in the chamber," says New York Gov. David Paterson. "Whatever happened the other day, they can simply go and have an election and whoever is the majority leader, I will work with them."

The Senate chambers have been locked since Monday, leaving all pending legislation at a standstill.
