A Ulster County judge who helped get the state’s Move Over Law to include tow trucks is now retiring after nearly three decades on the bench.
Village of Ellenville Justice Matthew Parker will retire Thursday after 28 years of service.
The judge helped advocate and lobby for the state law requiring drivers to move over for parked emergency vehicles with flashing lights after his son, Kyle, died in 2003 on the job as a tow truck operator.
The 67-year-old says he’s proud of the work he accomplished over the years both off and on the bench.
"Many people have come to me and thanked me for my service to the community. Several people have mentioned the fact that they feel I’ve had a positive influence on their lives. I’m very grateful for that," said Parker.
The longtime judge will not be replaced, and the village court is closing as of Thursday.
Village cases will now be heard in Warwarsing town court.
