Two deaths spark call for sidewalks along Route 9A
Pedestrians and town officials are seeking immediate action Monday when it comes to the lack of sidewalks along Route 9A in the town of Greenburgh.
Greenburgh Town Supervisor Paul Feiner is calling on the state Department of Transportation to add safe access for pedestrians along Route 9A, which is also known as Saw Mill River Road. He wants the DOT to identify locations where sidewalks can be constructed and install them immediately.
Feiner's plea for action comes after a second pedestrian was killed along Route 9A this year. Police say Manuel Guaman Saca, a Hispanic immigrant, was walking along Route 9A in Elmsford when he was struck by a hit-and-run driver over the weekend. The other incident involved the death of 38-year-old Harminder Singh, who was struck while jogging on Route 9A.
Greenburgh Police Chief John Kapica is now studying what traffic safety measures need to be taken in order to keep pedestrians safe.
