The Trump administration is refusing to restore the Obama-era program that shields young undocumented immigrants from deportation.
Last month, the Supreme Court blocked the Trump administrations attempt to end Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals.
But this week President Trump announced new restrictions on DACA, including requiring renewals every year and blocking any new applications.
"We are going to make DACA happy, and the DACA people and representatives happy, and we are also going to end up with a merit-based immigration system," the president said.
About 650,000 people are part of DACA, which allows young immigrants who were brought to the country as children to legally work and shields them from deportation. Roughly 66,000 more would be eligible if new applications were accepted because they met the age requirement of 15 years old after the Trump administration tried to end the program in 2017, according to the nonpartisan Migration Policy Institute.
