A trial is underway for a Bronx woman accused of killing a pregnant woman and cutting an unborn baby out of the victim's womb.
Ashleigh Wade has pleaded not guilty to charges of murder and kidnapping in the death of Angelica Sutton.
Police say the attack happened Nov. 20, 2015 inside Wade's home on Monticello Avenue in Wakefield. Prosecutors say Wade removed Sutton's uterus while the child was still inside the womb in an attempt to claim the child as her own.
Wade allegedly lured Sutton, who was 8 1/2 months pregnant at the time, to her apartment and stabbed her numerous times, avoiding the stomach area.
The victim's child survived and is now 2 years old.
During brief opening statements, the defense asked the jury to consider Wade's state of mind at the time of the incident and to keep an open mind in the case.
The trial is expected to last about two weeks. If found guilty, Wade could get a maximum sentence of 50 years in prison.
