Thursday marked National Gun Violence Awareness Day, and one Yonkers family knows all too well the pain that gun violence can bring.
Donna Nolan lost her son Michael last September when he was shot to death in the Burger King parking lot on Central Avenue. But instead of staying silent, Nolan is speaking out against gun violence.
"The police want to end the violence and make sure there are no more memorials like this one. That's why they have a gun tip hotline to get illegal guns off the streets," says Nolan.
Police Commissioner Charles Gardner says the tip line is working, with nearly 120 guns turned over in five years.
Members of the Yonkers Police Department wore orange on Thursday to show their support of the initiative.
The department also has several other programs to prevent gun violence, including issuing trigger locks for legal weapons.
