Thousands of Hispanic protesters gathered outside Gov. David Paterson's office in Manhattan Sunday to rally against legalizing same-sex marriage in New York state.
The protest was held early Sunday afternoon, but was met with a pro-gay marriage response Sunday evening. Those in favor of the same-sex marriage bill, which is being considered by the state Senate, gathered outside Paterson's office on 41st Street and 3rd Avenue with Paterson, Mayor Michael Bloomberg and celebrity supporters, including several Broadway stars.
Opposition to legal gay marriage in New York has been underscored by religious beliefs. Many protesters held signs Sunday that claimed God says marriage is between men and women only. Members of the Hispanic Clergy Association were also in attendance at the protest.
The state Assembly passed the same-sex marriage law Wednesday.
