A Thanksgiving tradition in Yonkers has come to an end.

For the last quarter century, 81-year old Harry Wesley has passed out free turkeys for Yonkers residents who could use a little something to brighten their holiday. "So many people didn't have food so I took it upon myself to do something about it," says Wesley.

Wesley has run a shoe repair shop on North Broadway for 54 years. To many in the neighborhood, he is much more than a cobbler--he is a great humanitarian. "He's a wonderful person and even if I didn't get a turkey, I'd be thankful and I'm grateful he's alive to do this," says Janice Grant Robertson, of Yonkers.

Wesley gave away 130 turkeys Monday morning on what will be his final act of Thanksgiving kindness for the neighborhood.

The 81-year-old longtime Yonkers resident has been ill for the last three months and just doesn't have the strength to go on. "Due to health issues and all the time I've spent. I need a break," says Wesley.
