Four teenagers from Rockland are facing charges after police say they threw eggs at houses and people in the Hasidic village of New Square.

Police say 19-year-olds Daniel Brophy and Catherine Donnelly were arrested with two other teenagers Sunday and charged with aggravated harassment.

Detectives say the kids also yelled anti-Semitic remarks. About 100 people, including the town's volunteer security team, stepped in to stop the teens. Police say the volunteers surrounded their vehicle and formed a "wall" that prevented them from leaving.

Police arrived on scene just before 3 a.m. to arrest the teens, who range from 16 to 19 years old.

The incident comes amid heightened tensions within the county due to the battle in the East Ramapo School District, which has pitted public school parents against the Orthodox Jewish and Hasidic-run school board.

The mayor of New Square and County Executive Ed Day released a joint statement that read in part that hateful acts like this will not be tolerated, and that awareness needs to be raised.

An interfaith summit is to be held on May 13 that will include a roundtable of Rockland County's top Jewish, Christian and Muslim faith leaders to discuss community issues.
