? Sources say a 19-year-old was attacked Wednesday night by more than a dozen people in a possible gang-related stabbing.
According to sources, the man was standing on Elliot Avenue just after 7 p.m. when a group of masked suspects wearing all black stabbed him in the stomach and chest.
Eyewitnesses say they saw about 10-15 male attackers wearing black bandanas and black hooded sweatshirts. Authorities believe that the stabbing could be gang-related, but they aren?t sure about the motive.
Just minutes after the stabbing, officials say three shots rang out in the courtyard of Cromwell Towers on Locust Hill Avenue, sending a group of 20 youths running for their lives.
The victim of the stabbing is being treated at a hospital. No one was hurt in the shooting.
Area residents say the neighborhood is home to the Elliot Avenue street gang that has had problems with a rival group in recent months.
?They planned to do this and they wait until such a time as they can find a person in a vulnerable situation,? says Jim Bostic, of the Yonkers Anti-Gang Coalition.
According to Bostic, the Elliot Avenue stabbing and nearby shooting may be just the beginning of a new wave of violence. He says he has been informed about several gang leaders who will be released from prison and coming home within the next 60 to 90 days.
Bostic hopes that with the help of the Yonkers Police Department gang unit and his anti-violence gang coalition, it may be possible to avert more gang-related crimes through negotiation and mediation.
