Teen charged with allegedly stabbing Newburgh cop
A teenage boy faces serious charges for allegedly stabbing a Newburgh police officer and another man in a street brawl.Edson Godinez, 17, is charged with felony aggravated assault on a police officer and felony first-degree assault. Godinez was allegedly leading a group of nearly 12 suspected gang members in the chase and attack of a rival gang member on the streets of Newburgh early Saturday morning.
Police say Officer Richard Hammer, who was patrolling the area, was also stabbed when he tried to stop the attack.
"He was struck several times in the back of the head," said Newburgh Police Department Lt. Charles Broe. "In his back and in his sides."
Hammer is home recovering and is expected to return to active duty in several weeks. The assault victim, who suffered lung bleeding from stab wounds, is being treated at Westchester Medical Center.
According to authorities, the gangs involved were the Benkard Barrio Kings and the Mexican Mafia. Police are asking for the public's help to locate other alleged gang members involved in the fight. Anyone with information about the incident is asked to call 845-561-3131.
