A teenage boy who allegedly ran from the law is in custody for another teen's murder, Mount Vernon police announced Monday.
Investigators staked out 17-year-old Antoine Gayle's Bronx home, where they say he tried to ditch them. "The suspect fled into a rear yard where he was observed throwing a gun into an adjoining yard," said Mount Vernon Police Commissioner David Chong. Gayle was apprehended after a two-hour search.
The teen is charged with murder for allegedly fatally shooting Jarel Patterson in the face on his 18th birthday as he left a bar on April 25. Gayle is also charged with attempted murder for allegedly shooting Patterson's friend.
Authorities declined to elaborate Monday on whether a rivalry led up to the incident. They also said leads were hard to come by in the case as witnesses were slow to come forward.
Gayle was scheduled to be arraigned sometime later in the day.
